The Backbone to Our Success: Our Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone to our continued success in food recovery and hunger relief in our community. Together, we have impacted the Greater Boston community in more ways than one. In the last 5 years, we have:
  • Tripled the amount of food rescued,
  • Grown the Cambridge Weekend Backpack Program to serve 500 children in 17 schools, and
  • Doubled the number of Home Delivery clients served in the past 5 years!
It is from a place of deep appreciation for our volunteers contribution to our work within the community that we have developed our new Volunteer Ambassador Program!!!

The Volunteer Ambassador Program: What we're all about!
The Volunteer Ambassador program cultivates a community among our volunteers, complete with exclusive educational opportunities, happy hour meet-ups, and connection to a network of like-minded individuals. Volunteers "travel" to each of the programs to volunteer and learn about all of the ways we work towards ending food insecurity and developing pathways for food recovery.
Ambassadors have the opportunity to:
  • Be a part of our growing volunteer community,
  • Gain and share knowledge,
  • Make a bigger impact and of course,
  • Have fun!
Volunteer Meet-Ups: Happy Hour!
At the monthly Ambassador Happy Hours, you'll meet like-minded Food for Free volunteers and have the opportunity to learn from a guest speaker. Each month, we'll bring in a different speaker to shed light on some aspect of the work we do at Food for Free – from logistics on the ground to systemic issues within the food system to policy reform and enforcement at various levels of the food system. Come learn, enjoy each other's company, share your experiences and insights, and have fun with us!

Becoming an Ambassador: How does it work?
Any Food for Free volunteer, new or seasoned, from all walks of life, ages, and from all backgrounds, is welcome to opt into the Ambassador Program!

Ambassadors-iN-Training (ANTs) will experience the breadth of Food for Free programs by volunteering with at least 5 of 7 programs (listed below). For each program you volunteer with, ANTs will get stamped by the program coordinator on a custom Food for Free passport card. Your "travels" will expand your understanding of how we, at Food for Free, adhere to our goal of "bridging the gap between waste and want" in the local food system. All the while, you'll be working alongside other like-minded volunteers and knowledgeable Food for Free staff members.

Once you collect the stamps from 5 of our 7 programs, you'll receive your certificate as an official Food for Free Ambassador!

Programs to "travel to" include: Contact Lauren at lauren@foodforfree.org with any additional questions!
