FOOD FOR FREE CELEBRATES TWENTY-FIVE YEARS
The
Food For Free Committee announces the celebration of its 25th anniversary
on September 27. The Party Under the Harvest Moon, to be held at MIT’s
Morss Hall, will raise funds for Food For Free’s Produce Rescue
program.
The Party Under the Harvest Moon will bring together an eclectic assortment
of noteworthy names to honor Food For Free’s contributions to the
local food system. Celebrants will include Tom and Ray Magliozzi—“Click
and Clack” from NPR’s Car Talk, historian and social activist
Howard Zinn, singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor,
and author of Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy, Walter Willett.
The party will feature finger foods and delectable sweets from restaurants
including B-side Lounge, Chez Henri, The Blue Room, and Upstairs on the
Square.
Partygoers can kick up their feet to live dance music or stroll through
the offerings of the silent auction which will include Cape Cod getaways,
dining excursions, and one-of-a-kind works of art.
The Party Under the Harvest Moon will run from 6-10 p.m. on September
27, at MIT’s Morss Hall, 142 Memorial Drive, Cambridge. Tickets
are $50 and are available by calling 617-868-2900 ext. 132, or (after
July 1) on the web at foodforfree.org.
Sponsorship of the Party Under the Harvest Moon has been provided by Cambridge
Health Alliance, Harvard University, MIT, W.T. Phelan Insurance, and Cambridge
Trust Company. Their leadership means that proceeds from ticket sales
will go directly to supporting Food For Free’s Produce Rescue program.
About Food For Free
Food For Free responds to local hunger by rescuing fresh food that might
otherwise go to waste and distributing it within the emergency food system
where it can reach those in need.
Each month, Food For Free’s Produce Rescue program distributes fresh
fruits and vegetables to between 50 and 60 food programs that collectively
serve between 15,000 and 20,000 individuals. Programs served include food
pantries, emergency shelters, meal programs, clinics and youth centers.
Food For Free expects to distribute more than 800,000 pounds of food in
2006.
Food For Free’s other programs are Home Delivery, which provides
monthly deliveries of food to low-income seniors and people with disabilities,
and Field of Greens, which grows organic vegetables for distribution to
emergency food programs.
