Timberland to support Food for Free's "Field of Greens" program

Cambridge, MA, May 16, 2006—The Food For Free Committee of Cambridge announced the receipt of a $5,000 community investment grant from the Timberland Company to support its Field of Greens program.

Field of Greens uses organic methods and volunteer labor to grow vegetables for distribution to local emergency food programs. Farm manager Larry Dixon is actively seeking volunteers and can be reached at fieldofgreens@foodforfree.org.

Last year, Field of Greens harvested 5,500 pounds of fresh vegetables, including beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, collards, and peppers. This year, Field of Greens aims to harvest 6,000 pounds of produce. Food For Free will once again distribute this produce among food pantries, meal programs, and emergency shelters within Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston. Currently, Food For Free serves more than fifty such programs.

Field of Greens has been part of Food For Free’s programming since 1981, thanks to the generosity of farmer Ari Kurtz, who provides Food For Free with use of a quarter-acre of his land each year. Field of Greens has operated for all but one of the last fifteen growing seasons. The year skipped was due to flooding caused by a beaver dam.
