FOOD FOR FREE NAMES CAMBRIDGE RESIDENT AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Cambridge, MA, January 24 - The Food For Free Committee of Cambridge today announced the appointment of David Leslie of Garfield Street in Cambridge as its new executive director.

Founded in 1981 by a small group of volunteers who salvaged food in borrowed trucks, Food For Free addresses local hunger by rescuing fresh produce that might otherwise go to waste and distributing it within the emergency food system where it can reach the people who need it. Food For Free now serves more than forty food programs in Cambridge, Boston and Somerville. In 2004, Food For Free distributed more than 640,000 pounds of food for just 30 cents per pound.

Maggie McNally, of Cambridge and president of the Board of Directors, noted, “We’re delighted that David has joined Food For Free as our new executive director. The demands on the emergency food system to feed the hungry in our nation are greater than ever, and the work of Food For Free, particularly in rescuing fresh produce, is more necessary than ever before in our nearly quarter century of addressing the issues of local hunger with healthy and nutritious food.”

Leslie was the executive director of the Cambridge Civic Association from 1992 to 1994and a member of its board of directors from 1996 to 1998. More recently, from 1996 to 2003 Leslie was the director of the Threshold Program, a comprehensive, non-degree program at Lesley University for young adults with diverse learning disabilities. A graduate of Harvard College, Leslie earned his Master's Degree in the Management of Human Services at the Heller School at Brandeis University. Leslie also is the president of the board of directors of the Wellmet Project, a non-profit agency in Cambridge that provides transitional housing and counseling services for mentally ill adults.

The delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables by Food For Free’s “Produce Rescue Program” to dozens of emergency food programs - pantries, shelters, meal programs, and clinics in Cambridge, Boston and Somerville provides critical assistance to the region’s most vulnerable members. Its “Home Delivery Program” offers free, monthly deliveries of food to Cambridge residents who are low income and home-bound due to illness or disability.
