Needed: assistant farm manager

A man stands next to a table of produce with a sign that says "Food For Free."

The Position:
The position would begin immediately and run through October and pays $15/hr. The Assistant Farm Manager would work every Wednesday from 7:30 to 1:00 at Field of Greens–a 1/2 acre located at Lindentree Farm in Lincoln–alongside the farm manager and a handful of volunteers. The Field of Greens Farm Manager and Assistant Manager are responsible, in conjunction with the Executive Director, for the coordination, management and oversight of Food For Free’s farming operation. Our goal, throughout the season, is to plant, maintain and harvest 4,000-8,000 pound of organically grown produce for distribution to our recipient agencies. Our primary crops are those for which we don’t receive a lot of donations at farmers’ markets and include carrots, beets, collard greens, cabbage, and swiss chard.

Field of Greens uses labor-intensive organic farming methods, thus volunteers are a critical part of successfully producing vegetables as they put in hundreds of hours of time each season; it is the responsibility of the farm managers to provide direction and supervision of the volunteers throughout the growing and harvest season.

Qualifications:
Past farming experience necessary–ideally experience with organic farming
Experience working with and managing volunteers is important
The ability to recruit a bunch more volunteers is a huge plus
That’s about it… a good attitude helps!
